About this Role

To fulfil the Technology requirements of the IoT programme, The Vodafone Group has developed its own IoT Service Platforms to target the key strategic growth area of Internet of Things & Consumer Electronics, designed specifically to meet the needs of Global IoT customers, protected by Vodafone IPR.


To support Vodafone’s key strategic growth areas of Internet of Things, Automotive and Consumer Electronics, Network Strategy and Engineering department require a highly capable and experienced Technical Packet Switched Designer (Mobile Core & IP) to support the delivery of a multi-million euro programme across Vodafone Group Technology and Operating Companies. This IoT Packet Switched Network Engineer will be responsible for the IoT system integration design of various IoT products, services & features as well as the reference framework.




What you’ll do

Key accountabilities and decision ownership:


  • Understand, review and challenge the solutions in the HLD on Mobile Packet Core & IP networks and convert these to Implementation Design documents (LLD).
  • Create detailed design documentations specifying the configuration matrix, security implications and guidelines followed. 
  • Create the Mobile Core network strategy and roadmap for IoT and its evolution for next 3 to 5 years.
  • Be responsible for Capacity Management on the network.
  • Make decisions that have impact on project scheduling, planning, and successful completion of deliverables.
  • Act as a mentor and share experiences to other team members.
  • Provide timely analysis on problems with updates to management and escalate if necessary, on particular projects.

Core competencies, knowledge and experience:


  • Knowledge of Mobile Packet Core routing including mobile devices, applications and device OSs and customer connectivity.
  • Knowledge of IP networking – switch, routing, firewalls, load balancers in Telco and Enterprise environment.
  • Knowledge of Cloud.
  • Good understanding of 5G technologies.
  • Experience in Design of major projects in Mobile core packet switch domains. Circuit switched knowledge would be an advantage.


Who you are

Must have technical / professional qualifications:


  • University degree: telecommunication degree, electrical/electronic or similar.
  • Industry certifications like – CCNA, CCIE, JCNIE etc
  • Full understanding and hands-on experience on configuring and troubleshooting network elements from Mobile core packet switch platforms like SGSN/CSGN, MME, GGSN/PGW, NB-IoT.
  • Over 5 years’ experience on working with 2G/3G/4G/LTE mobile packet core nodes for a network operator and/or equipment vendor.
  • Deep understanding of call protocols, call flows and products in mobile networks.
  • A good understanding of 5G technologies and Cloud.
  • Ability to lead and manage virtual technology teams, managing different stakeholders from business, technology, operators during solution design and implementation phases.
  • Experience with integrating defined 3GPP interfaces to external nodes DNS/RADIUS/PCRF/IMS.
  • Lead and work on projects that vary in size which involve solution design and build, first node integration and support in testing pre go live.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, be self-motivated and demonstrate capability and subject matter expertise.
  • Strong skills in network design documentation creation.
  • Understanding of NFV infrastructure.
  • Ability to create Method of Procedures (MOPs).
  • Knowledge of OSS/BSS tools for Fault and Performance management .
  • Good IP networking skills including MPLS and BGP.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, find faults and root causes on packet switched platforms.
  • Good knowledge of linux and ability to create scripting languages such as python, perl
