Application Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)


Location : Bangalore


The Application Engineer – BESS will be responsible for technical solution development, system sizing, proposal support, customer engagement, and application engineering for Utility Scale and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) Battery Energy Storage Systems.


The role requires strong knowledge of BESS sizing methodologies, renewable energy integration, grid services, power conversion systems (PCS), EMS, battery technologies, and project techno-commercial evaluation.


The engineer will work closely with Sales, Product Management, Engineering, EPC, and Customers to develop optimized BESS solutions for various applications.


Key Responsibilities


BESS Solution Design & Sizing


  • Perform BESS sizing based on customer requirements and project use cases. 
  • Develop technical solutions for: 
    • Peak Shaving 
    • Load Shifting 
    • Demand Charge Management 
    • Solar + Storage , Wind + Storage 
    • Backup Power 
    • Microgrid Applications 
    • EV Charging Support 
    • Frequency Regulation 
    • Grid Ancillary Services 
    • Renewable Firming 
    • Capacity Firming 
    • Energy Arbitrage 
    • Black Start Applications 
  • Perform energy and power calculations considering: 
    • Load Profiles 
    • Solar/Wind Generation Profiles 
    • Battery Degradation 
    • Round Trip Efficiency 
    • Availability Requirements 
    • Future Expansion Requirements 
  • Understand Grid Code requirements and utility interconnection requirements.
  • Analyse customer load data and electricity tariff structures. 
  • Develop business cases with Perform ROI, IRR, Payback Period and LCOE analysis.
  • Proposal & Customer Support
    • Support sales teams during customer discussions. 
    • Prepare: Technical Proposals, Compliance Matrix, Single Line Diagrams (SLD) System Architecture Drawings. Bill of Materials (BOM), Technical Datasheets 
    • Conduct technical presentations and customer workshops. 

System Engineering


  • Define system architecture including: 
    • Battery Containers 
    • PCS/Inverters 
    • MV Stations 
    • EMS/SCADA 
    • HVAC 
    • Fire Suppression System 
  • Coordinate with engineering teams for project execution. 

Simulation & Analysis support


  • Perform: 
    • Load Flow Studies 
    • Energy Yield Analysis 
    • Battery Degradation Studies 
    • System Efficiency Calculations 
    • Financial Modelling 
  • Support grid interconnection studies where required. 

Market & Technology Analysis


  • Track industry trends in: 
    • Lithium-Ion Technologies (LFP, NMC) 
    • Flow Batteries 
    • Grid Forming Inverters 
    • Hybrid Renewable Systems 
  • Benchmark competitor solutions and market offerings. 

Power Systems understanding


  • Power System Analysis 
  • Grid Integration 
  • Substation Fundamentals 
  • Protection Coordination 
  • MV/LV Distribution Systems 

Preferred Experience


  • B.E./ M.Tech in Electrical, Electronics, Power Electronics, or related field. 
  • 8+ years in Renewable Energy, Power Electronics, Energy Storage, Solar EPC, Utility Grid Projects, or Microgrid Solutions. 
  • Hands-on experience sizing systems from 500 kWh C&I projects up to 500+ MWh Utility-scale BESS projects. 
  • Experience with DC-coupled and AC-coupled Solar + BESS architectures.
