AECOM is seeking an experienced Lead Engineer – HVDC Systems to support Project Management Consultancy, Owner’s Engineer, technical advisory and design-review assignments for HVDC converter stations and associated transmission infrastructure.


The role will focus on reviewing contractor and OEM designs, ensuring compliance with employer requirements, applicable standards, grid-code obligations and project performance criteria.


Key Responsibilities


  • Lead technical review of HVDC system design, converter-station configuration and overall system architecture.
  • Review contractor and OEM engineering documents, including design criteria, specifications, calculations, studies, drawings and technical reports.
  • Verify compliance with project requirements, approved design basis, applicable IEC, IEEE, CIGRE and utility standards.
  • Review HVDC system ratings, operating modes, control philosophy, protection philosophy and equipment performance requirements.
  • Review power-system studies, including:
    • Load flow and fault level
    • Reactive-power and voltage control
    • Harmonic and power-quality analysis
    • Electromagnetic transient studies
    • Insulation coordination
    • Grid-code compliance
    • System stability and weak-grid performance
  • Review design and specifications of major HVDC equipment, including:
    • Converter transformers
    • Valves and valve cooling systems
    • Reactors and harmonic filters
    • AC and DC switchgear
    • Instrument transformers
    • Surge arresters
    • Capacitor and reactive-power compensation systems
    • Auxiliary power and earthing systems
  • Review control, protection, SCADA, telecommunications and cybersecurity interfaces.
  • Review electrical-loss calculations, efficiency guarantees and thermal-performance assessments.
  • Review Reliability, Availability and Maintainability studies, redundancy philosophy and spare-parts strategy.
  • Identify design gaps, technical risks, interface issues and non-compliances, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Participate in design-review meetings, HAZID, interface workshops, technical clarification meetings and value-engineering reviews.
  • Review vendor technical bids, deviations, data sheets and compliance statements.
  • Support factory inspections, FAT, site inspections, SAT, commissioning and performance testing.
  • Monitor closure of design comments, technical queries, concessions and non-conformance reports.
  • Coordinate with transmission line, cable, substation, civil, structural and project-management teams.
  • Provide technical advice to the client during procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.
  • Mentor engineers and support technical assurance across PMC and Owner’s Engineer assignments

Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience


  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 12 years of experience in power transmission, HVDC, EHV substations or power-system studies.
  • Relevant experience in PMC, Owner’s Engineer, EPC design review or technical advisory assignments.
  • Strong understanding of LCC-HVDC and/or VSC-HVDC systems.
  • Experience in reviewing HVDC system studies and high-voltage equipment designs.
  • Familiarity with PSS®E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, EMTP-RV, ATP or equivalent tools.
  • Knowledge of applicable IEC, IEEE, CIGRE and utility standards.
  • Strong technical-reporting, client-interface and multidisciplinary coordination skills.
  • Chartered Engineer, Professional Engineer or equivalent registration is preferred.

Additional Information

The position will be site-based at Khavda or Surat and may require travel between project locations, contractor offices, manufacturing facilities and client offices.


The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary AECOM Energy team supporting the safe and successful delivery of major HVDC and transmission infrastructure projects.
